I think it's completely fair to say that airlines can be too insular.
At the same time, DL has gone external for a fair number of senior roles
(CFO, Chief Health Officer, Chief Strategy Officer, President of
International) over the past couple of years. The jury is still out, but
I'm not sure how successful it's been.

Following up on Michael's point, one of the challenges of the airline industry is its stubborn overvaluation of airline experience and undervaluation of an outside perspective. I know firsthand how unique the airline industry is, but there are so many best practices that are happening in other industries that airlines are blind to or don't know how to implement, due to this bias for airline experience. No, I'm not saying airline experience isn't important, but rather, there could be a much better cross-pollination of ideas if this bias was diluted and the old silo broken up.

But what "integration" challenges exist at DL now?
What DL suffers from now - at least from the pax perspective - is inconsistency. This needs to be a focus.

Coming up on three years since Delta's last COO, Gil West, left the position has sat empty and Delta's operation has suffered for it. Gone are the days of "Cancelling cancellations" and record on time performance.
Spanos comes with a lifetime of work at PepsiCo followed by a couple of years at Six Flags. Not sure I see the draw here.
https://news.delta.com/mike-spanos-join-delta-chief-operating-officer
Delta has named Mike Spanos as Chief Operating Officer and the newest member of the Delta Leadership Committee, effective June 12.
"The experience and perspective Mike brings to Delta will enhance and accelerate the integration across our operational, customer experience and technology teams, aligning them to deliver an unsurpassed product and service for our customers and our employees," Delta CEO Ed Bastian said in a memo to employees Tuesday.
"The Delta people are the best in the business," Spanos said. "I'm looking forward to getting started, visiting the operation and rolling up my sleeves to enable our team to do what they do every day: run the world's best airline for our customers."
Spanos brings to Delta deep experience in frontline leadership, strategy, operations and a global perspective earned throughout his career. "Mike shares our values of servant leadership and always putting people first," said Bastian.
Spanos spent more than 25 years in a variety of leadership roles at PepsiCo and the Pepsi Bottling Group including:
* Regional executive roles across the U.S., Turkey, China, Asia, the Middle East and North Africa.
* President and CEO titles at PepsiCo International sectors.
* Chief Customer Officer of Pepsi Beverages North America.
* Leading sales and operations across U.S. and international locations for Pepsi Bottling Group.
Most recently, Spanos was President and CEO at Six Flags Entertainment, where he guided the company through the pandemic and a digital and customer-focused transformation.
A veteran of the U.S. Marines, Spanos led Marine units during numerous deployments, including in Desert Shield/Storm and as the senior instructor at the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course. He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy.
Spanos' first day at Delta will be on June 12. E.V.P. and Chief Customer Experience Officer Allison Ausband and E.V.P. and Chief of Operations John Laughter will report to Spanos, who will report directly to Bastian.

The "O" matters. Operations is what separates an airline from an airplane
museum. I'd be more forgiving of an outsider from Pepsico and Six Flags
coming in as CEO than as COO. Outside perspectives are important, but so
is deep domain knowledge and experience. I would argue operations would be
the one area most heavily weighted to the latter (*maybe* TechOps?).
Fun fact: They usually sell Pepsi at airplane museums.

I don't think hiring industry outsiders is a bad idea. As Court said, it's
the context of their experience that matters.
Oscar Munoz as a railroad guy did fairly well with United. Linda Jojo as a
telecom person did fine as our CIO. We have a bunch of ex-GE folks who
came over to United IT via chain migration, and I have to say they've all
picked up the airline domain pretty damn well.
Then there's Andrew Levy with his prior airline experience being hired as
United's CFO. That's still up for debate with some of us as to its success.

I just now saw this message. Sorry, too many balls in the air.
6,890 ft (2,100 m) was from old DAFIF data. I started work on importing data from AIP Argentina a few years ago but ... SQUIRREL! ... and that effort stalled. The format for AIP data is sort-of standardized but each country has its own quirks (and a few are just plain wrong) so pulling this data into GCmap is a major project.
In lieu of that, I manually transcribed the latest data for SABE (AEP) and it's now live on gcmap.com. That data says the runway is now 7,710 ft (2,350 m) long. Dunno where Simpleton Flying came up with their number but it does not appear to be correct.

I flew down to AEP with the tape measure and measured the runway. It looks like it's now ~8,800 ft. A few years ago, it was LGA length: ~6,900 ft.
The before and after aerials show how the airfield was expanded.

N401UA was UA's first A320. It first flew on 7 September 1993 and delivered on 24 November 1993; dunno where you got July 1993. I chronicled its last 30 days of service at
http://www.gcmap.com/featured/20230514 <http://www.gcmap.com/featured/20230514>
My first flight on an A320 (and my second on any Airbus) was on 27 December 1994, UA 149 ORD-SFO in 1A, aboard none other than N401UA.
My first flight on any Airbus was on 16 July 1991, PA 481 LAX-SFO aboard N216PA "Clipper Houston" which was an A300B4-203. That remains my only flight on a twin-aisle Airbus.
Despite my dislike for the A320 family, I've logged 69 flights on them, including the A318, A319, A320, and A321. (Just one on an A318, and two on an A321.)
